5TH ANNUAL SCARBOROUGH WORLDWIDE FILM FESTIVAL
OFFERS DIVERSE VIEWS AND EXPERIENCES OF SCARBOROUGH
From June 6 to 11, 2017, the 5th Annual Scarborough Worldwide Film Festival lights up Scarborough with outstanding films and unique interactive arts experiences in five different locations across Scarborough.
In addition to over 20 local and international film premieres at this year’s festival, there are many other events, installations, and experiences planned to compliment and enrich the audience experience at SCARFF. Guests of all ages can rock out to a free live rock concert before the 25th Anniversary Screening of Wayne’s World at Albert Campbell Square on June 9, or move to the beats of Scarborough-grown beatboxer and worldwide sensation KRNFX before the free outdoor screening of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey at Scarborough Bluffers Park on June 10.
Georgian polyphonic vocal ensemble Darbazi sets the mood for the Canadian Premiere of the hauntingly beautiful Georgian film, House of Others at the Fox Theatre on June 11. Scarborough poet Randell Adjei performs a spoken word set while The Wexford Restaurant serves up treats for guests at our free Local Heroes Night event on June 6 at University of Toronto Scarborough. There are many surprises and experiences that await our guests at each screening!
On June 10 at Scarborough Bluffers Park screening, we are also unveiling a temporary larger-than-life installation of a ‘SCARBOROUGH’ sign—reminiscent of the ‘HOLLYWOOD’ sign in Los Angeles, California—along the massive cliffs of the Scarborough Bluffs. The unveiling takes place at our Cinema Under the Stars event starting at 8 PM.
As an ode to Scarborough and the region’s creative legacy, there will also be life-size cardboard cut-out installations of well-known Scarborough artistic icons and celebrities, including actors Mike Myers and Jim Carrey, artist Doris McCarthy, and musician The Weeknd popping up in various screening locations throughout the festival.
“Scarborough is the place to be this June!” says Sergei Petrov, Executive Director of Scarborough Arts and Founder of the Scarborough Worldwide Film Festival. “What grew out of a simple idea of enriching Scarborough and the whole of Toronto through cinematic art now comes alive for its 5th year of celebrating the heroes of this region and presenting a diverse array of films by international masters and young local filmmakers. It is an open invite to anyone seeking to have fun and celebrate, to explore Scarborough and new points of view, and to anyone eager to celebrate Scarborough—or should I say, Star-borough, a place rich with talents, creative minds, and ideas.”
